The objective of this event is to provide an overview of the Innovation Funds’ progress and achievements, and to gather stakeholder feedback on future calls for proposals. Thus, this event presents an opportunity for sector-specific stakeholders to provide their input on the design of the 2025 Innovation Fund Call for Proposals.

Description

The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration and commercialisation of innovative net-zero and low-carbon technologies. The Innovation Fund aims to bring industrial solutions to decarbonise Europe to the market and is funded with revenues from the auctioning of allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System.
With a total budget of around €12 billion already committed since 2021, the Innovation Fund supports over 200 innovative projects across the European Economic Area (EEA).
The Innovation Fund now:
- Includes a €1 billion battery call for electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing or projects demonstrating innovative technologies, processes or products, that are sufficiently mature and have a significant potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Includes a €1.2 billion available to produce renewable hydrogen categorised as ‘Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin’ (RFNBO).
- Anticipates the inclusion of a new auction for industrial process heat decarbonisation which proposes to allocate the budget of up to €1 billion through fixed-premium auctions in support of projects that decarbonise industrial process heat through innovative electrification technologies such as heat pumps, electric boilers, resistance heating, induction heating, plasma heating and other solutions as well as renewable heat solutions (solar thermal and geothermal).
